The Earth gives us so much and it is important that we treat it right. With Earth Day approaching, Southwind wants to focus on the planet and what we can do to not only reduce our carbon footprint, but show how others can also. Here are some tips from each of our businesses, showing how small changes can lead to BIG impact!
When it comes to what we can do to reduce our gas and electricity use, MVP are the experts for the job. Here are some tips they wanted to share on what we can do for Earth Day and throughout the year.
Turn your thermostat either up in the summer or down in the winter 7 to 10 degrees from its normal setting. This will help have a positive impact on the climate by drastically reducing the amount of energy use. It can also save you 10% a year on the average price for your electricity bill.
Cut back on your shower time by 1 minute daily. By just reducing your shower time by this small amount you are able to save 60 gallons of water a month.
Switch to electric vehicles! Gasoline contributes greatly to air pollution when it is burned. Burning gasoline produces carbon dioxide and greenhouse gasses which causes stronger pollution which can be harmful to the planet's ozone layer.

Donate, Gift, Sell. As you get rid of items that you no longer need or use, avoid throwing items out. Many of the things that you don’t need could be very useful to someone else. Remember the old saying one mans trash is another mans treasure. Practice responsible recycling, gifting, donating, or selling items so they do not end up in landfills.
Reuse moving materials. Ask friends and family who have recently moved if they have moving materials that they no longer need. This eliminates the need for buying new supplies and ensures that nothing goes to waste.
Avoid unnecessary trips back and forth. Fuel is not very eco-friendly. This means that the more trips that you have to take back and forth to your new residence, the more impact you are going to have on the environment. If you can avoid unnecessary trips you will be able to cut down on fuel and other emissions.
We can’t look at Earth Day without considering how our landfills are highly impacted. At 1-800-GOT-JUNK?, over 70% of the jobs we do are kept out of the landfill. Here are some tips on how you can better dispose of your junk to protect the planet.
Switch to a reusable water bottle. Americans buy enough plastic water bottles to circle the earth five times each week. Make the switch now to cut down even further on what goes into the landfill.
Skip the paper and plastic at the grocery store. Forgo the paper or plastic bags by bringing your own reusable canvas bag the next time you’re at the grocery store. Petroleum-based plastic used to make the bags isn’t biodegradable, it will surely outlive us all in a landfill. Reusable bag usage is a simple step to drastically reduce your personal waste produced.
REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE. Cut down on what you throw away. Follow the three “R’s” to conserve natural resources and landfill space.
Taking care of our planet is important to Southwind.
